Janet Jackson’s The Velvet Rope is a very quotable album – for a multitude of reasons.  Some of the words she says are poignant and profound.  Others, are emotionally engaging and inspiringly introspective.  Some are shockingly sexual.  Below is a list of some of my favorite quotes from each of the songs and interludes that fit one of the above descriptions.  Enjoy!

01.  “We all have the need to feel special and it’s this need that can bring out the best in us, yet the worst in us.”

02.  “Put others down, to fill us up… oppressing me will oppress you.”

03.  “Does what they think of you determine your worth?”

04.  “Why you wanna go and do that, love, huh?”

05.  “Your coochie gon’ swell up and fall apart.”

06.  “Let’s not get too soft and gentle with it, cause I am not feeling in no mood to play around.”

07.  “Fasten your seat belts darling, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!”

08.  “I’m getting freaked from behind; I don’t even mind.”

09.  “Girl meets boy, girl loses boy, girl gets cute girl back.”

10.  “You don’t have to hold onto the pain, to hold onto the memory.”

11.  “Everywhere I go, every smile I see, I know you are there, smiling back at me.”

12.  “So tell me, do you think, maybe we’ve gone insane? To find a lover and through the words of pain… we’ve never met.”

13.  “How empty of me to be so full of you.”

14.  “What about the time you said you ‘didn’t fuck her, she only gave you head’?”

15.  “I’m scared to fall in love, afraid to love so fast, cause every time I fall in love it seems to never last.”

16.  “This is just between me, and you, and you.”

17.  “Holding myself close, pretending my arms are yours; I want no one but you.”

18.  “Mmm… my lips hurt… You wanna know what my tongue feels like?”

19.  “So, are you ready to journey within me? I’ll satisfy you.”

20.  “There’s nothing more depressing than having everything and still feeling sad.”

21.  “You can’t run away from your pain, because wherever you run, there you will be.”

22.  “Don’t ever let nobody tell you, you ain’t strong enough.”
